The Count's Story

Le Count Eugene de Roussy de Sales (1817-1915) was the 2e of the 3 sons of the prefect Félix de Roussy and Pauline de Sales. Upon his father's death, he was titled Count of Thorens, his eldest being Marquis de Sales and the youngest Baron de Trésun. Second lieutenant of artillery, Eugène participated in the first war of liberation of Italy in 1848. Captain, He left the army in opposition to anticlerical policy led by his cousin Cavour at the head of the Sardinian government. He married in 1858 a Frenchwoman, Renée de Brosse, who died after only 10 years of marriage. Eugène then devoted himself to the transformation of the Thorens castle in the taste of the time. Savoy having become French, he rallied to Napoleon III because of his policy favorable to the Church and was general councilor of Haute-Savoie from 1861 to 1889. Under the 4e Republic, he tirelessly denounced its anticlericalism and the cost of colonial wars. Cavour having died unmarried in 1861, his estate passed to his nephew Aynard. The latter, also unmarried and without issue, died in 1875, appointing his cousin Eugène de Roussy de Sales as heir.
